Thomas Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Wembley Fan Atmosphere Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment that the England team did not receive more support from the Wembley fans during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his squad continue their good form, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages settling the match. But, he was displeased with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach stated. “It could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. There was little noise. We didn’t get support back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad warranted more support today.”
“I stand by my words. We cannot do more than being three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a greater support in moments where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to regain energy, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Away from risking a fight with fans, the manager also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his squad. Yet the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, improve after their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this friendly,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after hitting a post and is a concern when the national team play Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
