The English Team against South Africa – Women’s Global Tournament Starts
Quiet now! The talking is over, for now at least, and the World Cup journey for England is set to start. The bad news is, they face a challenging match with South Africa as their first rival. On the upside, they start with a tough game facing the South Africans. Victory today would give England instant momentum and validate the cautious confidence in their build-up discussions.
Pre-Tournament Momentum
An excellent win over Australia during their final preparatory match has boosted that self-assurance, although the personal contributions of Alice Capsey (88 not out) alongside Sarah Glenn (claiming 5/32) presented Charlotte Edwards with a minor dilemma.
Edwards has a winning mentality, meaning there is little chance of the team having modest ambitions. However, looking broadly they are in the slightly unusual position where their tournament benchmark is quite obvious.
Tournament Expectations
Not making the last four might come as a small upset, even considering the progress made by usual lower-ranked teams. Reaching the final in front of the Aussies or Indians, the two clear favourites to lift the trophy, would mark a significant accomplishment. Should England emerge victorious… no, let’s not go there. It’s much too premature for such discussions.
Today’s match begins at half past ten in the morning BST.
