Donald Trump along with Japan's Recently Appointed Premier Share Praise and Vow to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

In the course of a recent trip to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump together with the Japanese recently elected Prime Minister Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and pledged to enhance the currently strong two-way ties.

Key Points from the Meeting

Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and congratulated her on becoming Japan's first woman premier. During their talks at the capital's Akasaka Palace, the former president voiced optimism that she would become one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of the country.

The prime minister, identified as a close associate of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, praised Trump's initiatives to address international conflicts and reportedly pledged to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.

Trade and Defense Agreements

The two governments revealed a list of joint initiatives in sectors such as power, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japan-based companies are considering investments of up to $400bn in the United States.

Furthermore, Japan had earlier pledged $550bn in long-term American projects, financing, and guarantees as part of an agreement to secure exemption from the former president's import duties.

Such moves are seen as possibly easing any future demands from the US side for Japan to boost its defense expenditure. Takaichi addressed this by promising to fast-track proposals to increase military budget to two percent of GDP.

Other Political Developments

  • Donald Trump did not rule out to a third term, though it is constitutionally impossible. He stated he ‘would like’ to serve again but won't exploit a VP loophole.
  • A Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib responded to Trump's comments, declaring, “Under no circumstances will we allow that.”
  • California Governor Newsom suggested he will decide on a White House bid after the 2026 midterm elections.
  • The leader of the US biggest government employees union demanded an end to the government shutdown, which is now the second longest in American history.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Democratic leader Jeffries for supporting a candidate in the NYC mayoral election.
  • The governor of Indiana Mike Braun announced a special session to reconsider congressional districts.
  • Democratic leaders in various states are planning redistricting in reaction to GOP efforts.
“Based on what I’ve heard from Shinzo and others, you are destined to be an outstanding prime minister,” Trump said to Takaichi. “I also want to congratulate you on becoming the first female prime minister. This is a significant achievement,” he added.

This encounter underscores the ongoing importance of the US-Japan alliance and sets the stage for further collaboration on economic, security, and diplomatic fronts.
